Who to Manage in FM20 | Northern Europe | Football Manager 2020 Guides

In this Football Manager 2020 series the aim is to provide some inspiration for you to decide which club you will manage. I plan to review a large selection of teams from some of the more popular regions and countries in the game.

I will be focusing on clubs with an interesting challenge and therefore may not use a team from every country. The series will be split into several posts, each with a focus on a particular region. In this post, I will look at clubs to manage in Northern Europe.

Who to Manage on FM20 | Northern Europe

Atvidabergs FF | Swedish Division 1

ÅtvidabergsIt’s rare that you will see a two-time national champion residing in the fourth tier of the footballing structure but this is exactly what will happen next year after Atvidaberg were relegated in the 2019 season. Fortunately for FM fans, this will not be replicated in-game as the Swedish season runs from April to November.

As such, you will take the reins of the club in tier three of Swedish football. Your aim is to take the club back to the top of Swedish football. Don’t repeat the fate of the real-life Atvidaberg!

Nordsjaelland | Danish Superliga

nordsjaellandEarlier this decade Nordsjaelland were threatening to become a real force in Danish football. They won the 2011/12 season and finished runners-up the following season, qualifying for European football as a result. Yet this promising start to the decade faded into mid-table mediocrity with the club finishing higher than 5th on just one occasion.

Realise their potential and transform the Danish side into European champions!

Iprottafelagio Grotta | Icelandic 1. Deild Karla

iprottafelagio GróttaGrotta are a sports club based in the Icelandic town of Seltjarnarnes. In real life, Grotta have just won promotion to the top flight of Icelandic football for the first time in their history. However, as the Icelandic season runs from May to September, this is not in FM20. As such, it will be your job to follow the example set by the real-life version of Grotta by winning promotion to the top tier.

Can you achieve this feat in season one of your save?

Rosenborg | Norwegian Eliteserien

RosenborgIn the late 90’s / early 00’s Rosenborg were a regular member of the Champions League, competing in a then-record 8 consecutive group phases from 1995 to 2002. They last reached the group stage of the competition over ten years ago in 2007/08. Though a regular in the Europa League group stage, Rosenborg will surely seek greater heights.

As the most successful Norwegian club domestically, you will have to fight on multiple fronts, maintaining domestic dominance whilst battling for European football. Could you break Rosenborg’s record of eight consecutive group stage appearances?

More Teams to Manage in Football Manager

Ekenas Idrottsforening | Finnish Ykkonen

ekenas ifEkenas IF are a second-tier Finnish footballing side who have reached the top-flight on only one occasion, all the way back in 1933. Since the turn of the century they have played mostly in the third-tier with three seasons in the fourth. However, the past four seasons have been played in the second-tier and as such the club will be looking to cement their status in the division before building towards promotion.

Leading this club back into the top-tier would certainly elevate your position as manager towards legendary status. How soon will you achieve this feat?

Djurgardens IF | Swedish Allsvenskan

DjurgardensThe Swedish top-tier must be a very interesting league to follow. Since 2010 there have been six different winners with Malmo winning the most with 5. Djurgarden became the sixth winner in the 2019 season (which will not be replicated on FM20). Your initial job will be to repeat the feat of the real-life side and win the 2019 Swedish season.

From here, your role will be to take the club further in Europe, eventually building the status of the Swedish leagues and becoming a real force in continental football.

Fredrikstad | Norwegian 2. Divisjon

fredrikstadFredrikstad are, in terms of titles won, the second most successful Norwegian team. They have won nine top-tier titles, one more than Viking in third place. However, their most recent title came in 1960/61 and they now reside in the third tier of Norwegian football.

This long-term challenge will require you to build up the Fredrikstad side to become contenders for promotion up to the 1. Divisjon before mounting a challenge for a return to the Eliteserien. Beyond that, Rosenborg stand in your way for a long-awaited title.

Knattspyrnufelag Reykjavikur | Icelandic Urvalsdeild Karla

kr reykjavicKR Reykjavik are considered to be the most successful Icelandic football team in its history. Founded in the final year of the nineteenth century, KR have won the highest number of Icelandic titles at 27. In European football, the club have not been as successful, perhaps as expected. They are yet to reach a group stage in either European competition.

Your job will be to maintain domestic dominance whilst pushing further forwards in European competition. This could end up being a long term save where you build the reputation of Icelandic football!

Boldklubben af 1893 | Danish 2nd Division

b.93B.93 have won nine Danish titles and therefore you might be surprised to find the club in the third tier of Danish football. However, the last of their nine titles came in 1946. Since then, they have won just one trophy – the Danish Cup in 1982. The club have dropped down into the third tier and will be looking for promotion back up to the higher divisions.

Can you rebuild the club and bring back the glory days?

Helsingin Jalkapalloklubi | Finnish Veikkausliiga

HJK HelsinkiHJK Helsinki, a Finnish top-tier club, are without doubt the most successful side in Finnish football. They have won the title on 29 occasions and remain the only Finnish football club to play in the group stage of the Champions League.

This club present the perfect opportunity to focus on European football. Domestic success should not be too tricky to achieve and so the majority of your focus can be on building Finland into a real competitive nation in continental football.
