Matthijs de Ligt begins his FM18 career with Ajax in the Dutch Eredivisie. The centre-back is already very well-rounded for his age and could become a crucial member of the Ajax first team if he stays. Unfortunately for Ajax, he made only 27 more appearances for their side before one of Europe’s biggest clubs came calling.

Bayern Munich | 2018-2026bayern munich

  • Appearances: 126
  • Goals: 4

De Ligt left Ajax for Bayern Munich in a £30M deal in the January transfer window of 2018. In 8 years at the German club he made 126 appearances and won several trophies too. He did spend two seasons out on loan at fellow German side Leipzig, as shown below.

Two years of consistent first-team football was a big factor behind de Ligt’s continued development.

Monaco | 2026-2027as monaco

  • Appearances: 20
  • Goals: 0

Matthijs de Ligt left Bayern in a £19.75M move as French giants Monaco looked to strengthen their defence. He only spent one year with Monaco before moving to England, but in that year he helped his side win the Champions League!

West Ham | 2027-2031west ham

  • Appearances: 119

Despite being a part of the CL-winning squad, de Ligt was considered more of a periphery figure and was therefore sold to West Ham for £30M. In four seasons with the London-based club, de Ligt played in 119 games. He did suffer relegation in his final season with West Ham which led to his move sale to Burnley.

Burnley | 2031-2034burnley

  • Appearances: 130
  • Goals: 2

If you would have guessed the team that de Ligt would have played most for in his career, you probably wouldn’t have said Burnley. But yes, in three seasons with his sixth club, de Ligt played 130 times and even led his side to a Europa League win! Incredible scenes.

Montpellier | 2034-2036Montpellier

  • Goals: 1

Matthijs ended his career in France with Montpellier. His 51 games for the French club meant that de Ligt has played over 500 professional games of football since the beginning of this FM18 save!
