The Bromma Boys #10 | 2020 Academy Report | An FM18 Story

Welcome to another post in our Brommapojkarna series! We’ve already seen how BP performed in the 2020 season, so let’s now take a look at our academy players and how they have progressed in the 2020 season.

The Bromma Boys | 2020 Academy Report

The Academy

BP Academy

We look fairly solid in the talents department with sixteen 5 star and five 4.5 star potential players. Some of them are already making a name for themselves in our first team, while others have just started their journeys towards professional football.

Below, I will take an in-depth look at the development of the players we highlighted as potential stars in earlier episodes as well as our new potential stars.

Now would be a good time to go back and read our 2019 Academy Report if you haven’t already!

Development phase 1 | 15-17 years old

Phase 1
Players in the 1st stage of development

No stand-out talents among our youngest players but no-one that really falls behind either. Oscar Fredriksson has the highest BP Style Rating of 40.67.

(What’s the BP Style Rating?? Find out here)

  • Martin Hogberg
Y Högberg 20
Martin Hogberg

From: Swedish Premier League side IFK Norrköping (€100K)

Nice attributes in the physical department and a great Determination. Seriously lacking in many other aspects though!

BP Style Rating: 35.00

Prediction: “He will need to improve everything in order to become a first team player”

  • Jan Kroon
Y Kroon 20.png
Jan Kroon

From: Youth intake 2019

Looking quite poor in most areas. A decent First Touch, nice Determination and a few decent Physical attributes are the only positives

BP Style Rating: 35.67

Prediction: Far far away from first-team football. Will probably need all six years in the Academy program, but might not make it anyway.

  • Albin Wahlberg
Youth Wahlberg.png
Albin Wahlberg

From: Youth intake 2020

A centre back with nice defensive skills, but lacking many of the attributes needed for BP Style Football.

BP Style Rating: 37.00

Prediction: Far far away from first-team football. Will need to work on his speed and technical and mental weaknesses in order to become a first team player in a position lacking competition.

  • Oscar Fredriksson
Y Fredriksson 20.png
Oscar Fredriksson

From: Youth intake 2018

Prediction 2019: “Far far away from first-team football. Will probably need all six years in the Academy program, but might not make it anyway”

Result: Mainly because of some serious injury issues to the first team squad, he played 21 games for the first team, with 5 assists and an average rating of 7.03.

Development: Not a great deal of improvement, except for a +4 in Determination. We also managed a personality change from Fairly Sporting to Fairly Professional.

BP Style Rating: 40.67 (Up 2.67)

Prediction: Despite playing quite a few games during 2020, he isn’t really good enough to feature regularly in the first team. Will probably get a few games here and there, but needs to develop in order to compete for a spot long-term.

  • Niclas Berglund
Y Berglund 20.png
Niclas Berglund

From: Youth intake 2019

Prediction 2019: “Far far away from first-team football. Will probably need all six years in the Academy program, but might not make it anyway.”

Result: Played 19 games for the first team because of a serious shortage in right backs. Surprisingly, he did amazingly well with 4 assists and an average rating of 7.57!

Development: Nope, awful. Not a single improvement! I really have no idea what he’s been up to in training…

BP Style Rating: 40.00

New prediction: Great performances on the pitch, but amazingly didn’t manage a single improvement in training. Will likely get some game-time in the coming season unless we manage to get our hands on some really nice right backs.

Development phase 2 | 18-19 years old

Phase 2
Players in the 2nd stage of development

Both highs and lows. A couple of decent players here, with Australian Daniel Pettit being the stand-out talent with an Academy high BP Style Rating of 52.00.

  • Mikael Jonsson
Y Jönsson 20
Mikael Jonsson

From: Youth intake 2019

Prediction 2019: “Needs improvements everywhere in order to compete for a spot”

Result: 8 goals and a 7.55 average rating in 10 games for the U19s

Development: Not great. A couple of +1s and a single +2 increase in Balance.

BP Style Rating: 41.33 (Up 2.00)

Prediction: Not the greatest player and quite far behind other striker options. Surprisingly, started demanding a spot in the first team, which I can’t give him. Therefore he left the club on a free transfer at the end of 2020. Next year he will be fighting for a spot at 2nd tier team AFC Eskilstuna.

  • Charles Moses
Y Moses 20
Charles Moses

From: Heartland – Nigeria (€170K) in 2019

Looks like a decent Nigerian prospect with nice physical attributes and decent Skill. Lacks a bit when it comes to certain mental aspects, but hopefully we’ll get that sorted out.

BP Style Rating: 45.33

Prediction: Will need a lot of training and tutoring to become great, but might make an occasional appearance in the first team soon enough.

  • Styrmir Sigurjonsson
Y Sigurjonsson 20.png
Styrmir Sigurjonsson

From: Breiðablik – Iceland (€160K) in 2020

A technically gifted midfielder, really lacking both mentally and physically. Low Determination is a worry as well.

BP Style Rating: 40.67

Prediction: Shows potential but needs to work on his weaknesses.

  • Hugo Zetterstrom
Y Zetterström 20.png
Hugo Zetterstrom

From: Youth intake 2017

Prediction 2018: “Will need multiple seasons in order to possibly become a first-team player”

Result: Spent 2018 and 2019 playing well for the U19s. Got his chance with the first team in 2020, playing 25 games, scoring twice from his central defender position and earning an average rating of 7.21

Development (compared to 2018): A nice development with +1 or +2 increases to most abilities. Improved his physique a lot with +3s in Acceleration, Jumping Reach, Pace and Stamina +4s in Agility and Balance and a +6 in Strength.

BP Style Rating: 32.00

New prediction: A solid defender, but not at all a BP Style player, which means that he won’t fit in most likely. He’ll be given a couple of seasons to improve his weaknesses, but if he doesn’t I’ll have to sell him eventually.

  • Amara Kone
Y Kone 20.png
Amara Kone

From: Africa Sports – Ivory Coast (€80K) in 2019

Prediction 2019: “Will probably get his chances as a back up to Lorshag straight away”

Result: Played 19 games for the first team scoring on 10 occasions and providing another 5 assists. Average rating 0f 7.20

Development: Not great. Mostly unchanged with a couple of +1s. However, nice to see that his tutoring paid off, with a +7 increase in Determination and a personality change from Low Determination to Balanced.

BP Style Rating: 43.33 (Up 3.00)

New prediction: Way behind Lorshag in the competition for a spot as starting striker. Will probably continue as a back up or go out on loan in order to boost his development.

  • Herve Aka
Y Aka 20.png
Herve Aka

From: Séwé FC – Ivory Coast (€70K) in 2019

Prediction 2019: “Might get his chance rather soon”

Result: Spent the year on loan at 3rd tier club GAIS, starting 21 games with an average rating of 6.70.

Development: Not a great deal of improvement, perhaps down to his light-heartedness. Most attributes unchanged or +1s.

BP Style Rating: 46.00

New prediction: Quite stagnant development coupled with an unconvincing season on loan makes it less likely for him to get the chance at BP. Perhaps a new loan or a permanent move!?

Development phase 3 | 20-21 years old

Phase 3.png
Players in the 3rd stage of development

These four players have really developed into decent players, all playing for the first team in the 2020 season.

  • Nikola Kresojevic
Y Kresojevic 20
Nikola Kresojevic

Prediction 2019: “Considered a solid part of the first team”

Result: Another solid season averaging 7.17 in 32 starts. 3 goals and 2 assists.  He also made another 6 appearances for the Serbian U21s, now totalling 12.

Development: Considering that he has now turned 20 this was another season of steady development. +1 increase in many attributes and +2 increases in Concentration, Off the Ball and Positioning. All abilities important to the Volante role.

BP Style Rating: 51.33

Verdict: At the age of 20 turning 21 later this year, and a frequent starter, he will leave the talent section of this series and therefore it’s time for a verdict, even though he may still have some development in him.

Since his start in the Academy at age 17, we’ve seen some serious improvement over the years. Notable attribute improvements are +4s in Corners, Anticipation, Composure, Concentration, Determination, Off the Ball, Acceleration, Agility, Jumping Reach, Pace and Stamina and +6s in Positioning and Strength!

  • Gustav Lorshag
Y Lorshag 20
Gustav Lorshag

Prediction 2019: “He will be our first choice striker”

Result: 17 goals and 3 assists in 32 starts is more than acceptable. He pretty much played up to the standard that was expected of him

Development: No real development to talk about. A couple of +1 increases but also a couple of -1 decreases, both mainly in fringe attributes. A single +2 increase in Off the Ball.

BP Style Rating: 51.67

Verdict: At the age of 21 and a frequent starter, he will also leave the talent section of this series and therefore it’s time for another verdict. Notable attribute improvements are +4 in Dribbling, First touch, Free kick taking, Passing and Off the ball and +5 in Decisions, Vision and Balance.

Considering the development or lack thereof during the last couple of seasons I fear that he won’t become that much better. This means that he’ll probably be good enough for this and possibly next season, but we will need to replace him in a couple of seasons if we want to take the next step.

Players out

  • Daniel Pettit
Y Pettit
Daniel Pettit

From: FFA COE – Australia (Free) in 2018

Prediction 2019: “He will hopefully develop into a great player!”

Result: He played 29 games for us during the 2019 and 2020 seasons with a nice average rating of 7.30. No goals and only 2 assists during this period though. He was sold to Everton during the 2020 season for €2.2M and a 50% sell-on clause.

Development: No real progress, a couple of +1s here and there but most attributes unchanged.

BP Style Rating: 52.00 (Up 1.00)

Prediction: I didn’t really feel that he took off, despite nice attributes. I demand more than a couple of assists in 30 games from my midfielders. Hopefully he’ll blossom at Everton and earn us some nice cash when sold on.

Pettit till Stoke

  • Lorenzo Venturini
Y Venturini 20 aug.png
Lorenzo Venturini

From: Free agent after being released by Siena in 2019

A really interesting player who impressed during the U20 World Cup. Very well rounded with excellent acceleration and a nice personality. Played 36 games for us during 2019 and 2020 with a nice average rating of 7.39. He caught the eye of several European clubs and Italian giants Juventus won the bidding war with a bid of €5.5M and a 50% sell-on clause.

BP Style Rating: 51.33

Prediction: Hopefully he’ll turn into an Italian star, but he might be lacking in technical aspect to take the next step.

Venturini till Juventus.png

  • Matteo Catenacci
Y Catenacci
Matteo Catenacci

Prediction 2019: “I’m really starting to doubt whether he’ll ever turn in to more than a decent player”

Result: A real improvement! 23 starts and an average rating of 7.16 with 2 assists and 2 MoMs. My initial thought was to keep him in the first team squad as a back-up, but when several clubs started to come in with some decent money, I decided to sell him. Winners of the bidding war were German side FC Köln with a €1.6M bid with a 50% sell on clause.

Development: A much better development than last year, not saying that much. Many +1s, a +2 in Dribbling, Marking and Composure, +3 in Anticipation and a staggering +6 increase in Determination!

BP Style Rating: 46.00

Prediction: Very nice speed, but I really feel that he lacks the technical ability to become a great wing back. Hopefully he’ll prove me wrong!

As you can see below, the Academy has produced some serious talent during the last couple of years, for us as well as for others. The younger players look a bit weak, but I think that’s the feeling every year. Thanks to our great youth training facilities they turn out pretty decent in the end anyway!

Current Academy products in the first team squad: Nine. Lorshag (31 games), Zetterström (25), Kresojevic (26), Aka (31), Koné (19), Berglund (19), Fredriksson (21), Westerberg (11) and Moses (10)

Notable Academy players at other clubs:

  • Fredrik Vestin – Lille – Sold for €425K in 2017/18. Currently in the Reserves squad waiting for his first-team debut.
  • Jonathan Antonsson – Wolves – Sold for €375K in 2017/18. Started 2 games in his first season at Wolves. Then spent the rest of 2018 and the entire 2019 season on loan at Scottish Premiership side Aberdeen, playing 49 games. Went out on a new loan in 2020, this time to Blackburn in League One, playing 34 games.
  • Ludvig Johansson – Monaco – Sold for €1.4M in 2018/19. Started 7 games in 2018/19, but spent the rest of 2019 playing for the Reserves. Got 2 Cup games for the first team in 2020, but spent the rest of the season in the Reserves yet again.
  • Fredrik Hammar – Stoke – Sold for €1.9M in 2018/19. Spent the 2020 season on loan at Orlando City in MLS, playing 15 games.
Matteo Catenacci – FC Köln – Sold for €1.6M in 2019/20. Got a couple of games for the first team straight away, with an unconvincing average rating of 6.76.
  • Lorenzo Venturini – Juventus – Sold for €5.5M in 2020. Played regularly for the Juventus first team from the start.
  • Daniel Pettit – Everton – Sold for €2.2M in 2020. Has played 3 Cup games for the first team.

The next episode

In the next episode we will see how the team does in the 2021 season. Will they finally win the league? Will they get through to the group stage of the Europa League? The only way to find out is by reading the next episode!

Thanks for the read, I hope you liked it as much as I did writing it!
