In this Football Manager 2018 experiment, we have placed a 32-year-old Alex Ferguson into FM18 to see how he’ll progress. This will be the final part of the series as we see Ferguson reach his peak. If you missed any of the previous posts, do go back and read them through the link below.
In this post, we see how Alex Ferguson left Juventus for a Premier League club…
Sir Alex Reborn | Liverpool?
2037-2038 | Season Twenty-One
We join Ferguson after his first year in charge of Italian Serie A giants Juventus. Fergie joined Juve after being sacked from Leicester and in his first year in Italy he won four trophies: Serie A, Europa League, Italian Cup and Italian Super Cup.
In his second season in Italy, Juventus completely dominated the league.
They stormed to the title with a huge 103 points and having lost only 1 match (this came against Chievo). Two titles in two years for Ferguson and Juventus.
- Italian Super Cup: Runners-Up
- European Super Cup: Winners
- Italian Cup: Winners
- Champions League: 1st Knockout Round (lost v Real Madrid)
Ferguson will be disappointed not to have made further progress in the Champions League, especially after their exit in the group stage last season. But they came up against a strong Real Madrid side who blew them away in the first leg.
Juventus did retain their Italian Cup crown and they also won the European Super Cup, beating Paris Saint-Germain 1-0. The lost out to Lazio in the Italian Super Cup.
I had expected Ferguson to continue his career with Juventus and stay there until he’d won the Champions League. But Ferguson has left Juventus after two years in charge to return to the English Premier League.
2038-2039 | Season Twenty-Two
Real-life Alex Ferguson became the legend that he is by creating a legacy at his famous Manchester United side. He managed the Red Devils for over two decades and led them to numerous trophies.
Over the years he developed many rivalries with many clubs. Most notably you’d think of Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester City as these three clubs really pushed Ferguson and Man Utd and did manage to snatch the Premier League away from Old Trafford. But one rivalry that cannot be forgotten is with Liverpool.
Liverpool have never won the Premier League, their last first division title came in 1990. And this remains true in 2038 as Ferguson leaves Juventus TO JOIN LIVERPOOL!
Can Ferguson be the man to finally bring the title to Liverpool after nearly 50 years without it?
Ferguson’s career with Liverpool didn’t get off to the best of starts. They won just once in the opening six league games of the season but did manage to bounce back through the Christmas period.
Liverpool went on a brilliant unbeaten run that saw them go 22 league games without defeat. This run saw them head into the business end of the season in 2nd place behind Manchester City.
In the penultimate game of the season, Liverpool played Man City at home. Sitting two points behind City, Liverpool needed a win to maintain their title challenge. And a win is what they got! They thrashed City 3-0 on the day to go to the top of the Premier League by one point.
A win against Barnsley secured the Premier League title for Liverpool, their first top-tier title since 1990. Alex Ferguson has performed a miracle in his first year at the club.
What an incredible season. Liverpool have finally won the Premier League.
Liverpool began the season poorly but fought back fiercely to overtake City at the top of the table. A brilliant way to finish this experiment.
- Carabao Cup: 4th Round
- FA Cup: 6th Round
- Champions League: 1st Knockout Round
No elusive Champions League for Ferguson, but I have no doubt that if we were to continue this simulation Ferguson would win it before the end of his career.
Yes, Ferguson is only 54. He probably has at least 15 seasons left in him. But I have decided to end this experiment here as I feel this is a fitting way to end what has been a very fun series to write. Let’s take a look at Ferguson’s career in detail.
- 2017 – Ferguson began his career with East Stirlingshire
- 2019 – He joined Annan Athletic in SL2 where he stayed for nearly a decade
- 2028 – Ferguson finally made the move to England where he joined Charlton Athletic
- 2029 – SPL side Dundee picked up Ferguson from Charlton and where he stayed for three years
- 2032 – Scottish giants Celtic poached Ferguson from Dundee but he only stayed there for 1 season
- 2033 – English Premier League side Wolves, recently promoted to the EPL, hired Ferguson but he wasn’t able to succeed there and was fired just six months later
- 2033 – Leicester chose Ferguson as their new manager and the decision was vindicated, he led them to a Europa League semi-final but lost out to Barcelona
- 2036 – A massive move for Ferguson. Juventus hired Fergie and he won consecutive Serie A titles before leaving for his final club
- 2038 – Ferguson helped Liverpool to their first Premier League title, their first top division title since 1990.

If you liked this post, you can leave your feedback in the comments! This has been one of my favourite Football Manager experiments that I have run. It’s been so interesting to watch Ferguson start his career again and take a completely different route to success. To finish this save at Liverpool having just ended their wait for a Premier League title is very fitting indeed.
