AS Roma | The Academies | Football Manager 2017

Hello and welcome to The Academies, a Football Manager 2017 series which takes a look at some of the world’s best football academies and sees how their best prospects progress on FM17.

In this post we look at AS Roma. Francesco Totti is one of the most decorated players in Italian football and it all started in the Roma academy. Many young players are determined to succeed in football and aspire to be like the world-class legend.

But are there any future superstars currently learning their trade in Roma? We follow the careers of four hot prospects to have come through the Roma setup on Football Manager 2017.

The Players | Who could be the next wonderkid to emerge from the academy?

  • Alessandro Bordin

Alessandro Bordin looks to be a very promising central midfielder. His decent dribbling, flair and technique attributes show that he is more of an offensive threat, thriving in the advanced playmaker role.

  • Eros de Santis

Eros de Santis could easily become a decent attacking full-back. He’s already very well-rounded and, based on his attributes, could possibly be re-trained to play either as a defensive midfielder or even central midfielder.

  • Riccardo Cappa

What stands out about Riccardo Cappa is his strong mental attributes. The striker has a lot of time to develop his physical and technicals and therefore could be the star of our four hot prospects.

  • Riccardo Marchizza

18-year-old centre-back Riccardo Marchizza is a good prospect. If he can be given first team football in the near future, I can see him developing into a really strong centre-back.

Five years on | Which of our youngsters has developed the best so far?

  • Alessandro Bordin

League Appearances: 29

League Goals: 3

Wow. Just 29 first team appearances in the league for Bordin in 5 years. This has certainly not aided his development and he’ll do very well to make up for the lack of game time in his early years.

  • Eros de Santis

League Appearances: 97

League Goals: 1

In complete contrast to Bordin, Eros de Santis has played just shy of 100 league games. The right-back has left Roma to join fellow Italian side Chievo and has become an important member of their Serie A side.

  • Riccardo Cappa

League Appearances: 61

League Goals: 16

Riccardo Cappa has had three loan spells away from Roma, all at clubs in the second tier of Italy. Although he’s yet to develop a lethal attacking instinct, his attributes have increased significantly and could well lead him to break into the Roma first team moving forward.

  • Riccardo Marchizza

League Appearances: 80

League Goals: 1

Riccardo Marchizza has been afforded three loan spells away from Rome, two in the Italian second tier and 1 with Stade Rennais in Ligue 1. Though his average ratings have been poor, first team football will no doubt have been useful to his continued development.

Retirement | Did our youth prospects reach their potential?

  • Alessandro Bordin

League Appearances: 321

League Goals: 17

Interestingly, despite playing just 29 games in the first five years of his career, Alessandro Bordin has finished his career playing the second most of our four hot prospects.

After leaving Roma, Bordin saw out his career with Belgian side Charleroi, spending 11 seasons there.

  • Eros de Santis

League Appearances: 397

League Goals: 9

Eros de Santis is a bit of a journeyman having played for nine clubs throughout his career. He played mostly in Italy before moving to Portugal and then Romania.

The full-back suffered relegation FOUR TIMES in his career, all in Italy, and will be disappointed not to have played regularly for a top European club.

  • Riccardo Cappa

League Appearances: 218

League Goals: 81

Though he promised much as a youngster, Riccardo Cappa never found a club where he played more than 50 league games. Like de Santis, Cappa played for nine clubs. However, for the majority of his career he has been used as a backup, playing more than 20 games in a season just five times.

  • Riccardo Marchizza

League Appearances: 234

League Goals: 1

Riccardo Marchizza played the most games for Roma out of our four hot prospects, making 36 league appearances over two spells at his home club. He’s spent time in both France and Belgium but never thrived abroad.
