Bayern Munich | The Academies | Football Manager 2017

Hello and welcome to The Academies, a Football Manager 2017 series which takes a look at some of the world’s best football academies and sees how their best prospects progress on FM17.

In this post we look at Bayern Munich. The German giants often produce world class newgens on Football Manager and can boast the likes of Bastian Schweinsteiger and David Alaba as Munich academy alumnus.

But are there any future superstars currently learning their trade in Munich? We follow the careers of four hot prospects to have come through the Bayern academy on Football Manager 2017.

The Players | Who could be the next wonderkid to emerge from the academy?

  • Alexander Lungwitz

Alexander Lungwitz is an attacking full-back with plenty of time to grow and develop as a footballer. At just 15 years of age, if trained correctly and given enough opportunities he could progress into a great player.

  • Christian Fruchtl

Perhaps our most exciting prospect is goalkeeper Christian Fruchtl. His attributes are truly excellent for a 16 year old and he is already 190cm tall. Good signs moving forward for the young keeper.

  • Gianluca Gaudino

Gianluca Gaudino is the oldest of our four hot prospects. At 19 years old it is crucial for him to be involved in first team football. He is a technically gifted central midfielder and looks to be more of an offensive threat than a defensive rock.

  • Niklas Dorsch

Unlike Gaudino, Niklas Dorsch is more of a defensive-minded central midfielder. He looks fairly all-rounded and at 18 years of age he, too, must be given opportunities in first-team football.

Five years on | Which of our youngsters has developed the best so far?

  • Alexander Lungwitz

League Appearances: 121

League Goals: 7

Alexander Lungwitz is the first player to have left Bayern in these first five years after failing to register a single appearance for their first team. His new club, Hamburg St. Pauli, have already given him a full season of regular football which he has thrived in.

  • Christian Fruchtl

League Appearances: 130

League Clean Sheets: 27

Christian Fruchtl has had 4 full seasons as first choice goalkeeper. This is not often the case for young goalkeepers and so Fruchtl has benefited where his peers may not. He has improved a lot in the last five years and should continue to do so if he can continue to get first team football.

  • Gianluca Gaudino

League Appearances: 94

League Goals: 4

Just 94 matches by the age of 24 is really not good enough and unfortunately Gaudino has suffered from the lack of football. Two loan spells yielded just 16 league appearances over two seasons. He is still technically good enough to make an impact in top tier football, but he just hasn’t been given the chance so far.

  • Niklas Dorsch

League Appearances: 119

League Goals: 9

Niklas Dorsch is still a Bayern Munich player but has yet to make a first team appearance for his first club. He has spent time out on loan at 3 different clubs which has given him a decent amount of game time.

Retirement | Did our youth prospects reach their potential?

  • Alexander Lungwitz

League Appearances: 357

League Goals: 10

Lungwitz finished what was a strange career by suffering relegation with Frankfurt Erienbruch. Before that, he spent 12 seasons with Hamburg St. Pauli. He played 122 league games in his first four seasons with Hamburg. In his next four he played just 25.

Alexander suffered relegation SIX times in his career.

  • Christian Fruchtl

League Appearances: 501

League Clean Sheets: 135

It took until 2026 for goalkeeper Christian Fruchtl to join a top class team as first choice goalkeeper. He left Bayern after just 8 league appearances to join Mainz. Within one season Dortmund came sniffing. Fruchtl saw out his career with Dortmund, winning two Bundesliga titles in 10 seasons with the club.

  • Gianluca Gaudino

League Appearances: 307

League Goals: 13

Gianluca Gaudino is the only player of our four to have played abroad. He played for five clubs in Germany before moving to Poland to play for KGHM Zaglebie. It’s been a fairly unspectacular career that had promised more. Clearly a lack of first team football in those early years stifled Gaudino’s development.

  • Niklas Dorsch

League Appearances: 398

League Goals: 21

Despite being assessed as a more defensive midfielder in comparison to Gaudino, Dorsch actually scored more goals than his ex-teammate, perhaps highlighting how poor Gaudino was.

Dorsch played most of his football for Nurnberg in the Bundesliga but failed to win any competitions throughout his career. He, like Lungwitz, ended his career with relegation.

It seems that a reluctance to leave Germany has hindered Bayern’s hot prospects chances of success, with three out of the four ending their careers trophyless.
