Youth Development: Man Utd | 2026 Update Part 2 | Football Manager 2017

Welcome to the second instalment of the 2026 Youth Development update with Manchester United.

This is the second part so if you haven’t seen the first part please click here.

Let’s go straight into seeing how our youngsters have progressed in 2026.

Missed any of Youth Development so far?

We’re looking at eight players in the following post. The previous seven players were looked at in the first of the 2026 posts.

Youth Development

Francisco Trincao

Career Appearances: 171          Nation: Portugal          International Apps: 0

Career Goals: 22                                                            International Goals: 0

Francisco Trincao had potential to be a very good player at United. However due to formation changes that excluded wingers, Francisco was unable to break his way into the first-team.

Since leaving United, he has found a place in the Monaco side and has played the majority of their fixtures over the last two years.

Honours:          None

Jens Birngruber

Career Appearances: 158          Nation: Germany          International Apps: 52

Career Goals: 8                                                               International Goals: 8

Jens Birngruber is clearly one of the most exciting youth players to have come through the ranks at Old Trafford. Signed from Wolfsburg in 2018, he has gone on to become an integral part of United’s side.

He has just passed 150 league appearances for the club and looks set to go on to make a whole load more.

Honours          Man Utd:          Premier League (2020, 2022, 2026)          Champions League (2026)

Lee O’Connor

Career Appearances: 89          Nation: Ireland          International Apps: 36

Career Goals: 1                                                         International Goals: 1

Lee O’Connor, similar to Dayot Upamecano, lacked opportunities in the United first-team. Since leaving Old Trafford, he has played 50 games for Aston Villa.

Honours          Man Utd:          Premier League (2022)          FA Cup (2023)

Marcus Rashford

Career Appearances: 227          Nation: England          International Apps: 82

Career Goals: 51                                                           International Goals: 27

Marcus Rashford has become a very important squad member throughout his time at Man United. He has made 227 league appearances for them, scoring 51 goals.

Marcus played a part in England’s victorious Euros campaign in 2024.

Honours          Man Utd:          FA Cup (2016, 2017, 2023)          League Cup (2018)          Premier League (2018, 2020, 2022, 2026)

                                                Champions League (2026)

Honours          England          European Championship (2024)

Riechedly Bazoer

Career Appearances: 340          Nation: Holland          International Apps: 46

Career Goals: 20                                                           International Goals: 1

Riechedly Bazoer became a vital part during my time in charge of United, often acting as a rotational deep-lying playmaker. He has since been sold from United and has spent time both in Portugal and France.

Honours          Man Utd:          League Cup (2018)          Premier League (2020)

Tahith Chong

Career Appearances: 265          Nation: Curacao          International Apps: 35

Career Goals: 23                                                            International Goals: 3

Tahith Chong never developed at United, and therefore was promptly sold in 2019 after several loan spells.

Tahith has made a name for himself in the Championship with Ipswich, playing over 200 games for them.

Honours          Curacao:          Caribbean Championship (2023)

Thomas Buitink

Career Appearances: 194          Nation: Holland          International Apps: 22

Career Goals: 70                                                           International Goals: 12

Thomas Buitink was a developing youngster during my time as Man Utd manager, but after resigning Thomas was not given a chance under the new manager.

He has moved to Spain to play for Sporting Gijon and has had a successful first season, netting 17 goals in 32 games.

Honours          Man Utd:         Premier League (2020)

Timothy Fosu-Mensah

Career Appearances: 272          Nation: Holland          International Apps: 61

Career Goals: 9                                                            International Goals: 0

Timothy Fosu-Mensah became a constant in the United side over the years. His strength in centre-defence formed the base of the team.

He made 236 appearances for Man Utd before moving to Everton for just under £20M.

Honours          Man Utd:         FA Cup (2017)          League Cup (2018)          Premier League (2018, 2020, 2022)
