Youth Development: Homegrown | Man Utd 2016 | Football Manager 2017

One of the biggest parts of Football Manager is building a team to become the best that they can be. To achieve this it is more than likely that you will, at some point, be relying on youngsters to do the job.

Some of you may enjoy the process of developing young players to become the foundation of your team for years to come. For many a Football Manager this is what makes the save so immersive.

You can produce a player from your youth academy to become the all-time leading goalscorer for your club, or the worlds most expensive player. Youth development is a big part of Football Manager, and so I am bringing a short series following a save I have with Manchester United.

Manchester United are famed for having an incredible youth set-up. If you mention ‘The Class of 92’ to any long-time football supporter they will instantly know what you mean.

Paul Scholes, Ryan Giggs, David Beckham, Gary and Phil Neville and Nicky Butt were all produced in this famous year at the club and went onto become integral parts of the first-team for many years to come. But how do players reach their full potential? Why do some players fade away?

I won’t claim to have answers to these questions. But this following series will follow many different youth prospects that will come through the ranks of Manchester United.

We will see which players develop into superstars and which players fail to reach their potential. In doing this I hope to find some patterns as to what can help a player reach his full potential and avoid the dreaded fade of potential stars.

Youth Development

For the purpose of these posts avoiding becoming too long, I will write two posts per season. One post will be about players who graduate through the youth set-up. The other post will be about young players I have scouted and bought into the club.

The likes of Timothy Fosu-Mensah and Tahith Chong were bought over from Holland to become part of the youth academy in Manchester but started the game at Manchester United. Therefore I will include these two in the ‘homegrown’ side of the series. This first post will focus on players who begin the FM17 cycle at Old Trafford.

As I am playing through my Manchester United career these posts will not be regular. I will post a yearly update detailing the development of our players in the two series. Below I will show the players in which I am focussing on from the beginning. In the next part you can find out how they have progressed.
